Job Description

Safe Harbor Wills & Trusts is a growing estate planning and elder law firm serving families throughout Central and Northern New York. We help clients protect what they have built, prepare for the unexpected, and make difficult legal and financial decisions with greater confidence.

We are building a law firm that combines excellent legal work with exceptional client service and strong, efficient systems. Our team handles estate planning, probate and trust administration, Medicaid planning, guardianship, and related elder law matters.

We are not a traditional law office where files sit on desks waiting for someone to tell you what to do next. We value people who take ownership of their work, communicate well, solve problems, meet deadlines, and keep matters moving forward.

As our practice continues to grow, we are looking for experienced professionals who want to grow with us. We offer an environment where capable team members are trusted with meaningful responsibility, encouraged to improve the way we work, and recognized for producing great results for the clients we serve.

We are seeking an attorney who can provide quality legal services to our large, diverse client base. Our ideal candidate will work passionately and effectively alongside our senior partner and staff to ensure a successful outcome for clients. Contact us today if you have outstanding research and writing skills, can handle a heavy caseload, and are comfortable using today’s legal software!

If you are organized, accountable, client-focused, work well in a fast-paced environment, consistently deliver high-quality work, and enjoy being part of a team that is continually improving, you may be a great fit for Safe Harbor Wills & Trusts. Reach out to us today!

Compensation:

$90,000 - $95,000 yearly plus potential for bonuses based upon production

Responsibilities:
  • Preside over paralegals, administrative assistants in connection with keeping track of time records, reviewing client billing, setting up client meetings and completing client projects
  • Get the appropriate legal documents ready for clients, such as brief, motions, and pleadings, as well as correspondence
  • Represent clients in court to argue motions during legal proceedings
  • Identify client conflicts and determine case strategies with options for resolution
  • Advise clients by weighing available options toward a successful outcome and plan a course of action

  • Conduct estate planning consultations, design and signing meetings.
  • Advise clients regarding wills, revocable trusts, irrevocable trusts, powers of attorney, health care proxies, living wills, and related planning strategies.
  • Handle probate and estate administration matters.
  • Conduct annual C.A.R.E. Program review meetings.
  • Review and edit estate planning documents.
  • Build relationships with clients and referral partners.
  • Collaborate with attorneys and staff to deliver an exceptional client experience.

Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs is needed
  • Advanced computer skills working with legal research programs (Westlaw and Lexis) required
  • Minimum 1-2 years’ experience working in a law firm environment
  • Public speaking, decision-making, communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills are necessary for this role
  • Required Juris Doctorate (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school; representation of clients for at least 2 years a plus
  • Licensed to practice in New York State and in good standing.

  • Two or more years of experience in estate planning, elder law, probate, trust administration, or closely related practice areas.

  • Excellent communication and client relationship skills.

  • NYS Driver's License.

Preferred, but not required:

  • Crisis Medicaid planning experience.

  • Familiarity with Irrevocable Medicaid Asset Protection Trust planning.

  • Experience in Special Needs Planning, business succession planning, business entities, asset protection planning, or estate/trust litigation.

  • Public speaking, seminar, or workshop presentation experience is a plus, but not required.
