Job Description

The Building Maintenance Technician works on the first shift in a large facility in Washington, DC, performing hands-on maintenance and repair tasks to keep the facility safe, clean, and fully operational. This role involves extensive walking, working on your feet throughout the shift, and regularly working in an open-air environment that is hot in the summer and cold in the winter. You will handle a variety of maintenance activities, from basic electrical and plumbing work to painting, equipment checks, and general facility upkeep, while providing courteous customer service to visitors.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine electrical maintenance such as changing lightbulbs and ballasts throughout the garage.
• Paint bathrooms, offices, parking lines, walls, and other areas to maintain a clean and professional appearance.
• Replace and repair doorknobs, locks, and other door hardware, and hang items as needed around the facility.
• Respond promptly to spills on the property, including frequent oil spills, and ensure safe, thorough cleanup.
• Complete daily work order lists, update supervisors on completed tasks, and document follow-up items accurately.
• Inspect and perform general maintenance on facility equipment, including checking tire pressure, charging batteries, and completing preventive maintenance tasks such as wiper replacement.
• Deliver friendly, professional customer service to all garage customers and visitors.
• Conduct regular walkthroughs of the facility to identify issues that need repair or attention and collaborate with quality assurance to improve overall facility conditions.
• Perform basic plumbing tasks, including unclogging toilets and addressing minor plumbing issues within the garage.
• Carry out scheduled preventive maintenance work on equipment and facility systems to minimize downtime.
• Update work orders and reports in a timely manner to keep maintenance records current and accurate.
• Work weekends as needed (including Friday through Sunday) to support facility operations.
• Safely use hand tools such as screwdrivers, Phillips head screwdrivers, and other basic tools for general maintenance tasks.
• Adapt to working in different weather conditions and maintain productivity in an open-air, non-climate-controlled environment.
• Effectively multitask by prioritizing and handling multiple maintenance requests and work orders during the shift.

Essential Skills

• Approximately 4+ years of maintenance experience in a hands-on role covering multiple types of repairs and facility upkeep.
• At least 1+ years of experience working in different weather conditions, including hot and cold environments.
• We are ideally seeking someone who is bilingual in English and Spanish.
• Strong punctuality and reliability, consistently arriving on time and completing assigned tasks.
• Weekend availability, including the ability to work shifts that may fall between Friday and Sunday.
• Mechanical aptitude with the ability to change ballasts, use basic hand tools, and troubleshoot minor equipment issues.
• Experience performing basic electrical work related to lighting and ballasts.
• Experience with basic plumbing tasks such as unclogging toilets and handling minor plumbing maintenance.
• Background in parking garage or similar facility maintenance and outdoor maintenance work.
• Ability to perform preventive maintenance on equipment and facility systems.
• Familiarity with HVAC-related maintenance tasks at a basic level.
• Ability to work with and manage work order tickets, including updating and tracking maintenance activities.
• Strong multitasking skills and the ability to prioritize multiple work orders and requests.
• Customer service skills, with the ability to interact professionally and courteously with garage customers.
• Comfort with being on your feet for extended periods and walking the facility for most of the shift.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience in a parking garage or similar large facility environment is beneficial.
• Prior exposure to quality assurance or continuous improvement efforts within a facility is helpful.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with supervisors and team members to coordinate maintenance activities.
• No formal certifications, medical clearances, DOT requirements, licensing, or specialized PPE are required for this role.
• Interest in career growth into lead roles or supervisory positions, including potential advancement to an Assistant Facilities Manager.

Work Environment

This role is based in a large, open-air parking garage at Union Station in Washington, DC. The primary shift runs from approximately 5:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., with an additional schedule noted as Sunday through Thursday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and weekend work may be required. You will be on your feet and walking the facility for about eight hours per day, working in an environment that is not air conditioned or heated, with hot conditions in the summer and cold conditions in the winter. The work involves using basic hand tools and performing maintenance tasks throughout the garage, including bathrooms, offices, and parking areas. There are no formal certification, medical, DOT, licensing, or specialized PPE requirements noted for this position.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Washington, DC.

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $25.00/hr.
